Trends and Knowledge Structure of Studies on Qur’anic Reading Methods: Bibliometric and Network Visualization Insights
Abstract
The teaching of Qur’anic reading is a central pillar of Islamic education, essential for preserving religious literacy, safeguarding the Arabic language, and maintaining cultural identity. Although numerous studies have compared traditional and modern pedagogical approaches, there remains no comprehensive bibliometric mapping to identify research trends, knowledge structures, and future directions in this field. This study addresses that gap by analysing global trends, influential contributors, thematic structures, and emerging research fronts in Qur’anic reading studies. Using a bibliometric approach, data from the Scopus database (1987–2025) were examined through Biblioshiny for performance analysis, science mapping, and thematic evolution, following the PRISMA 2020 framework. The results show a sharp rise in publications since 2017, with the Arts and Humanities (45.5%) and Social Sciences (35.7%) as dominant fields, complemented by increasing interdisciplinary contributions from Computer Science and Engineering. Thematic mapping identifies “Islam”, “Qur’an”, “Tafsir”, and “Arabic languages” as core, established research themes, while “Biblical Studies”, “Tajwid”, “Qur’anic Recitation”, “Judaism”, and Qur’anic exegesis are emerging as priority areas for future investigation. The novelty of this research lies in combining bibliometric network analysis with grand theoretical perspectives, such as Gadamerian Hermeneutics and Structural Hole Theory, to reveal the convergence of traditional scholarship, digital innovation, and interfaith dialogue. The findings hold significant implications for Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Quality Education) and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), offering evidence-based guidance for educators, policymakers, and technology developers in creating inclusive, technology-driven Qur’anic literacy programmes.
