Abstract

This study aimed to develop a guidance counseling model that integrates the Bodhisattva spirit and teachings of the Sutra of Infinite Meanings (Amitartha Sutra) with modern cognitive psychotherapy principles. Using a qualitative-dominant research and development (R&D) approach based on the ADDIE model, the study included validation by a Buddhist scholar and a clinical psychologist, as well as limited trials with two professional therapists and six adolescent and young adult clients experiencing mild to moderate psychological concerns. The validation results produced scores of 3.5/5.0 from the Buddhist expert and 4.8/5.0 from the clinical psychologist, confirming the model’s theoretical and clinical validity. Effectiveness testing showed that 100% of clients experienced a shift in perspective, 67% showed improved emotional regulation and prosocial intentions, and 100% of therapists reported that the model was easy to implement without intensive training. The conclusion affirms that this model is valid, practical, and effective as a holistic approach that expands therapeutic goals from symptom reduction to the cultivation of noble character (mettā, karuṇā, muditā, upekkhā) and social contribution, making it relevant for educational and mental health service contexts in Indonesia.
